Southern Ontario Leatherjacket Alert!

Leatherjacket insects

Leather jackets and Crane Flies are cropping up again on lawns in the GTA.  Leather jackets are the larval stage of Crane Flies. They usually re-appear in the leatherjacket form in Late April through Early May, as the rain helps force them to surface and washes them out where they can be seen easily on the road, driveway or patio.  These larvae normally hatch in September or October and survive through the winter right up until pupation begins around mid-August.

If you are finding these larvae on your driveway or sidewalk, please call and let us know. We have an effective treatment that will help reduce the Leatherjacket population on your lawn and stop them from killing your grass. This leatherjacket treatment starts at just $97  and up depending on your lawn size.

What Are Leatherjackets?

Crane Fly Leatherjacket ControlLeatherjackets are the larvae of the Cranefly. Craneflies are mostly harmless, however, the “leatherjacket” whcish is their larvae state will chew on the crown of your grass plant leaving behind only ‘grass stubble’, or short stubs of grass plants causing damage to your lawn.  The Cranefly, if found in high enough populations, is an early harbinger of potential leatherjacket issues.  Each Crane Fly can lay 200-300 eggs that will hatch in 11-15 days!

If they are appearing in your area, please comment below or on our Facebook page and help us track where these insects are attacking.
