a couple quick tips on over seeding:
1.  Seed wont grow until the temperature is right.  This is a combination of ambient temperature and soil temperature.  These are the natural triggers for grass seed.
2.  If the seed isn't watered and kept moist- don't expect any results.
3.  Don't buy cheap seed. You'll regret it year after year.
4.  Different seeds have different germination periods.  For instance, perennial rye can be up in 1-7 days, annual seeds can take 10-17 days and Kentucky bluegrass can be anywhere from 21-30 days before it germinates.- keep watering even when you see the first sprouts come up, or else you won't get the benefits of the mixture of grass.
5.  Use endophyte enhanced grass seed.  It helps to prevent chewing insects naturally.
