Why Overseed?

Our Over-Seeding service will help to thicken your entire lawn with the highest quality certified grass seed available.  We carefully select the type of seed that is best suited for your lawn based on its environment, traffic and other conditions.  It will help to thicken up those areas that are really thin and not looking their best.   This service is included in our Chemical-Free Package or can be purchased separately.  Ideally, it should be combined with Core Aeration for better germination.

WHO NEEDS IT?

  • Customers whose lawns are not as thick as their potential.
  • Customers with small thin or bare spots caused by insect and grub damage or traffic.
  • Homeowners who want a stronger thicker lawn because they have chosen not to use pesticides.

HOW OFTEN?

Over seeding should be done every year in order to successfully integrate stronger, healthier, more disease and insect resistant plants into your lawn. Should be done in spring or fall unless adequate irrigation is available regularly.  Ask your LawnSavers Plant Health Specialist for their advice.

BENEFITS

Thick lawns increase natural weed resistance.   Creates a more insect /disease resistant lawn by integrating stronger cultivars of grass into your lawn.  It will help reduce previous damage and small bare spots. The result is a greener thicker lawn –Sooner!

PROCESS
We broadcast custom blended, specially selected, certified seed mixtures during early spring after the threat of frost has passed, or in the early fall allowing enough time for seed to become established

PRICE
Starting at $69.95 for 2000 sq.ft. and $99.95 for 4000 sq.ft.

Timing: Spring or Fall when temperatures are lower and moisture is abundant.

Seed Selection: it is critically important to choose the best seed on the market for Toronto, Durham, Peel and York Lawn conditions.  It should be 'certified' which means it is specially bred to withstand the elements and harsh growing conditions much better.

Care:
Soil:  Grass Seed must make firm contact with the soil in order to germinate and create a healthy new lawn.
Water: Grass Seed must be kept moist (but not soaked) in order to germinate successfully.  Think of the kidney bean in a Styrofoam cup experiment that most of us did in grade school.  It you kept your paper towel wrapped bean seed moist- it germinated, if you let it dry out- you failed , and if you kept it full of water, it drowned.

80 % of the LAWNSAVERS PROFESSIONAL TURF MIXTURE has ENDOPHYTE!!  Endophyte is a natural deterrent to lawn feeding insects such as chinch bugs, billbugs and sod webworms. The endophyte is technically a fungus (Acremonium lolii) that grows within the leaf and crown parts of “infected” perennial ryegrasses and tall fescues. The fungus secretes alkaloid compounds which appear to act as natural "insecticides" within the plant. Two characteristics of the endophyte have great practical importance. First, the organism does not affect either the growth or appearance of the grass, and it requires a laboratory analysis to detect its presence. Secondly, it is seed transmitted and apparently not transmitted in any other way. Thus, once a non-infected stand is established, it can be expected to remain that way. Also, there have been scientific studies proving that endophyte “infected” cultivars have depicted a higher drought tolerance than cultivars without endophyte. Why buy Certified Seed??  Certified cultivars or varieties like Moonstruck Kentucky Bluegrass have been developed by Plant Breeders to have specific genetic characteristics which, when combined, give improved performance. The significant characteristics that are important to you, the Professional Turf Manager, are increased purity, increased germination, drought tolerance, disease resistance, winter hardiness, wear tolerance, and a more attractive, darker green colour.  Also, Certified Seed is the only practical means of increasing, ensuring and certifying that a seed stock has high genetic purity and quality standards.

High endophyte turf should never be used for grazing by animals. The same compounds that resist insect damage will also harm grazing animals. Horses are particularly sensitive to endophyte infected pasture or hay.
