Websites that can help you understand how to water your lawn during water bans & restrictions:
Local water-use bylaws in all York Region municipalities stipulate that “odd” house numbers may use water outdoors only on “odd” numbered days of the month, and “even” house numbers may use water outdoors only on “even” numbered days of the month.
* Remember that the ‘one inch, once a week’ rule applies to lawns that are already well established. New sod will require one inch of water 2 to 3 times per week for the first 3 weeks after which time you can follow instructions above for established lawns. New grass seed MUST stay moist until established. This may mean watering lightly 2 or 3 times per day for 4-6 weeks.

Halton Region (Oakville, Milton) Restrictions |
- (current as of April 2024) Halton Region has relaxed its full outdoor water use ban and is instituting a mandatory odd/even outdoor water use restriction effective July 1st. The mandatory odd/even water use restriction requires adherence for all outdoor watering. Even-numbered houses may water only on even calendar days and odd-numbered houses may water only on odd calendar days. Outdoor watering includes watering of lawns, flowers/vegetable gardens, trees and shrubs. Outdoor watering is only permitted during the hours of 6 to 9 a.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Your lawn only requires one inch of water per week. By using a Rain Gauge you can accurately monitor the amount of water your lawn receives naturally each week. The Region requests that residents continue to minimize other outdoor water uses. Residents are to refrain from washing their driveway or the sidewalk. Further details of specific water use restrictions and exemptions can be found on the Region’s website.
