Core Aeration

Core/Lawn Aeration

  • Increases air circulation to break down thatch through decomposition.
  • Allows water and nutrients to penetrate down to the root zone where the roots can more easily utilize them.
  • Promotes increased root activity as roots branch out and face less competition from compacted soil bases. This results in a thicker lawn above the soil.
  • Helps top-dress lawn to thicken less dense areas.

Technically speaking, aeration is the naturally occurring process of air exchange between the soil and its surrounding atmosphere. Practically speaking, aeration is the process of mechanically removing small plugs of thatch and soil from the lawn to improve soil aeration. Textbooks often refer to the practices of soil aeration as soil cultivation (coring, spiking and slicing). The aeration process is also commonly called core aeration in the lawn service industry, and homeowners often refer to it as aeration.

Our Core Aeration Service is a mechanical service that takes small plugs of soil out of your lawn in order to provide for air nutrients and water to reach the root system where they are needed most.  These holes help to ease the compaction allowing increased root growth and vitality.  Also, speeds up decomposition of excess thatch.

Who needs it?

  • Most lawns in our service area were built on land that had the topsoil stripped away, leaving mainly dense clay for the roots to fight through.
  • Heavily compacted lawns due to traffic or construction.
  • Lawns with excess thatch build-up.  Aeration done once or twice a year will break down that thatch naturally.
  • Lawns that are not responding well to regular maintenance and watering.

How often?

  • Aeration should be performed at least once per year in either the Spring or Fall.
  • Regular aeration helps to ease compaction over time. Ask your LawnSavers Plant Health Specialist for their advice!

How much does it cost?

  • The average price per application is $79.00

  • Mechanical process utilizes small tines that remove thousands of cores form your entire lawn.
